A selection of Benin bronzes taken in the African wing of the British museum. Created from the thirteenth century onwards by the Edo people of the Benin Empire, located in modern day Nigeria, they are the foremost example of African art and their discovery led to a wide appreciation of African art within Europe. They ended up in European hands after a British expedition destroyed and looted Benin City in 1897.
