Slavery existed in Africa but it was not the same as what the Europeans introduced. Europeans formed a type of slavery in which slaves were a piece of property with no rights. And psychologically controlled. As for Africa, a slave might be enslaved to pay off a debt or pay for a crime. Slaves in Africa lost their place in society through enslavement but eventually they or their children might become part of their masters family and become free. The treatment of slaves varied in Africa. Some were treated well and well fed, some slaves owned slaves themselves. Some worked in government administration, and might become an important state or royal official with wide ranging powers. Some might’ve worked within their masters household as servants or agricultural laborers. Some were sent to work in the gold mines of west Africa.
