The Benefits of Coconut Oil
Many of the beneficial qualities of coconut oil can be attributed to its content of lauric acid, capric acid, caprylic acid, and medium chain triglycerides.
Lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid exhibit antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial properties that make it effective at preventing viruses such as herpes and HIV. It is useful against Candida (yeast) and even cancer. These properties collectively strengthen the immune system.
It also contains Vitamin E (an antioxidant), Vitamin K (assist with blood components) and iron.
Composition of Coconut Oil
At room temperature, coconut oil is solid. This is because 90% of coconut oil is saturated fat. But do not be alarmed. Traditionally, we are taught to stay away from saturated fats. Coconut oil is different due to its medium-chain triglycerides. These fats are easily metabolized by the body and used for energy not leading to an accumulation of fat in the arteries which is further responsible for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, strokes, and heart attacks. It is actually protective of the heart and arteries. For this reason many athletes use it. It is abundantly consumed in tropical areas such as the Caribbean, Philippines, and India where there is low incidence of death from heart attacks and strokes.
